You came, and I was mad to have you: your breath cooled my heart that was burning with desire.
They meet again, in death.
Van's gaze is cool upon her, and she trembles only a little as her fingers pick at the plush in her arms. Even in death, he cuts an intimidating figure. But then again, he'd never turn his blade on her--not Arietta, whom he took in and watched over, whom he'd made a God General. Not Arietta, so frail and small with an incredible talent for artes, stifled deep under layers and layers of insecurity and pain.
His gaze never wavers, and Arietta is the one to speak up. Her voice is small, and she clutches her doll tight, so tight...
"Commandant--"
"Did you fail?"
Arietta flinches, and his words pierce any sort of shield she might have put up. It cuts deep, right into her heart.
"Yes, Commandant."
"I see."
He doesn't say anything else. Arietta presses her face against her doll and doesn't dare look up. It might be seconds or minutes or days or weeks or years before she lifts her head. He's already gone.
They've been working on rebuilding Earth for months, and Shiro decides they need a break. He practically commands it—but then again, the paladins don't really need to be commanded to listen to Shiro. Even if he's no longer the Black Paladin, they still see him as their leader. It's kind of a joint responsibility, between Keith and Shiro.
The point is, they listen. Pidge goes off to tinker on something with Matt and Sam and Colleen. Keith goes with Kosmo and his mom to do… something. Bond, maybe. Coran goes off to do something; maybe teach some of the Garrison the Altean alphabet. Hunk's going to cook with his family. Allura goes off with Romelle—maybe on a date, Hunk suggests, with a sly look at Lance. Lance decides he really doesn't mind, because Shiro has already suggested they go somewhere else.
He wonders when he stopped feeling jealous about the way Allura looks at Romelle.
Shiro and Lance pile into the Red Lion, and Shiro guides him to a small planet in another galaxy. Honestly, Lance has no idea what to expect, because Shiro's been frustratingly cagey. Lance decides he doesn't really mind, because Shiro's so close to him he can feel how warm he is, and Lance… Lance feels at ease in a way he hasn't in a very long time.
Huh. He wonders when that happened, too.
“I'm surprised you aren't asking me a million questions,” Shiro says, and Lance can hear the smile in his voice.
“Eh,” Lance says with a shrug. “I figure if you want to surprise me, it's gonna be really good.” He tilts his head back to grin at Shiro. “It better be really good, big guy.”
“Oh, don't worry,” Shiro says, and his eyes practically sparkle. “You're going to love it.”
And when they touch down on the planet, Lance realizes why Shiro brought him here. It's a planet covered entirely by an ocean. It's small, but the ocean is full of life. And Lance? Lance is spellbound, his eyes wide with wonder. There are fish, alien fish he's never seen before, but more importantly…
“Shiro, look at all these sharks!” Lance exclaims. The sharks swim around him, making little cooing noises, and Lance lets out a peal of laughter, bright and free.
Shiro doesn't really notice the sharks. He's looking at Lance like he's the most beautiful being in any galaxy.
van and arietta.
shiro and lance.
